Do you have any experience using cheap UV filters?

Yup Dys... I got one before... yes it protected the lens; however, it also diminished it's contrast and made the lens more receptive to flaring... Never used cheap ones again. :)

yup, have to agree with sir earl. i just use the cheap UV lens for daytime shooting to protect my kit lens. but for night shots where there are proximate light sources...it brings out those ghastly flares! yikes! :D

Sunpak UV filters exhibit those problems you mentioned. :D

Depends on what lens you put it on. If you're going to put it on your expensive Canon L lens, para mo naring ginawang Sigma yan.

@brent

high five!

by the way, some filters are thick and can cause vignetting...

...your lens is as good as its weakest glass part.

oh that's why.. i've encountered a lot of flare and ghosting issues with my sunpak. all this time i thought it was because of my lens (i had it replaced pa!) what would be a perfect filter for L lenses then? recommendations please... :)

A Canon filter maybe?

I use a Nikon NC Filter on my Nikon Tele-zoom.

Tried a Hoya Super HMC on my Wide to Tele before. Its good, but pricey. Still prefer the quality of the Nikon NC over it. Planning to get a Nikon NC Filter to replace it as well.

By the way, I just removed the Sunpak UV filter from my Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens. The glare is gone and the colors of the pictures taken have deeper saturation.

:) The use of filters certainly has sparked many a controversy, that crosses brands and types... Some lenses are really, should be left off without them. While some, more ressilient than others can be left with them without any noticeable loss in quality, contrast or be subjected to susceptibilities of more glare, flaring or ghosting... etc.

would be nice if there was a database that posted such info. then it would make all our lives less difficult. got the hoya hmc for my 85 happy so far. whats the diff anyway with multicoated and super multiocated?

Carlo, you'll be fine with the Nikkor 85mm f/1.4 when it comes to filters... I use a Nikon NC filter and sometimes an L37C with mine... No problem... However, I couldn't say the same with my ZF, the thing simply does not want filters (.) :(

Somehow, it cools down the contrast... :(
