View Full Version : What's your most extreme step(s) to get that shot?
Alden Arellano 09-06-2006, 10:37 PM Just out of curiosity, what are the lengths you've gone to get a shot you (or a client) wanted?
So far the most for me was I went fin swimming alongside triathletes during a race in the island of Palaui, Cagayan North (very, very beautiful island, by the way). Probably the extra step here was that I shot with a digital point & shoot inside a home-made UW case.
Problem was the hood that was supposed to shield from the sun's glare got detached and with the dark goggles I wore it was a case of "blind shooting". I couldn't see anything in the LCD. Tsambahan na lang. I didn't get the shots the way I wanted, but I liked some of them anyway :D
Ria Vallesteros 09-07-2006, 06:09 AM I can shoot while riding behind someone on a motorbike! :) Very useful for tri or cycling!
aaronvicencio 09-07-2006, 08:11 AM i went rock climbing in masbate without any ropes and any previous experience.
there was this instance that i had to jump a ravine with a 200 foot drop underneath me. i had to jump, then take hold of a protruding rock and hang on for dear life. then the mountaineers would just help me up. and we had to do it again going down. my camera was strapped on my back with my lowepro bag..
after that experience, i got back spasms. couldnt stand up for a day.
aaronvicencio 09-07-2006, 08:13 AM @alden
i was also there this year for the palui island race..
i was up there, stationed near the lighthouse.

Hey Ria,
Any tips on this? I've always wanted to shoot my friends doing tri!
Ria Vallesteros 09-07-2006, 08:50 AM @tj
hang on for dear life with your legs! squeeze the bike with your legs so you have leverage. i carry around two cameras on my neck but that's about it. i haven't figured out how to ride a bike with three cameras.
talk to your driver and give him directions like when to slow down, who to go up to. i usually ask for a bike escort from the race director or the local police before the start of the race.

i have video of the capoeira class we went to at my multiply - annaria.multiply.com.
Alden Arellano 09-07-2006, 09:07 AM @Ria, you're well known for that kind of shooting. Something I wouldn't do for fear of hurting my camera :) Kodakan mo naman ako pag natuloy ako sa O2.
@Aaron, yes I remember you. Ikaw iyung may dala ng Canon? Kamusta shots mo? Wasn't able to get to the lighthouse, very busy covering the events. Sana next year meron ulit. Great photo opps! By the way, it's good you were still okay after that cliff hanging ordeal. Also, I can relate to the back spasms hehehe.
Guys, this is not just limited to sports or adventure. Anything basta outside our usual comfort zone.
Examples are:
-you sat motionless for hours on end to get a shot of a rare bird
-you ate three large pizzas while waiting for a client (just kidding)
I remember Sir Jo narrating how he stayed at one spot in the Fort from morning till sundown just to get the light he wanted (with a little help from a glass of bottomless iced tea).
Another was when I VA'ed for John Ong. I tried to shoot the couple while riding with them on the roller coaster at Enchanted Kingdom.
Earl Gonzalez 09-07-2006, 09:15 AM A friend gave me this photo a few years back... :)
IMO It certainly defines how extreme one will go just to take a shot... :D

aaronvicencio 09-07-2006, 09:28 AM After these experiences, everything else is so easy..
Ever tried island hopping in the Babuyan islands during rainy season?
I was stranded for 4 additional days..
but all in all, Cagayan north is a very beautiful place.
@ alden
i love shooting sports and travel, so when i was given the chance to take pics of the palui island race, i just took the chance.
i only have a few posted on the internet, its on my multiply as well.

can i see your water shots?
Alden Arellano 09-07-2006, 10:03 AM @Earl, Wow extreme weight saka extreme investment na din. Extremely dedicated talaga hehe
@Aaron, I actually tried to attach two water shots but I couldn't resize down to just 39.1 kb (am I right?) requirement. Paano ba gawin ito?
Thanks!

You can compress/optimize your image using Photoshop's "Save for web" dialogue... :) Hope this helps.
Jo Avila 09-07-2006, 03:24 PM I was photographing RCBC Plaza while it was being constructed. I was taking an overhead view of the fountain area. I was atop one scaffolding but there was a scaffolding at least feet away that offered a better vantage point. I was too lazy to climb down the scaffolding that I was atop of and climb up the other scaffolding.
So I just jumped across - with a medium format camera and lens hanging around my neck :D

@Alden
I'm well known for being able to shoot from the back of a motorcycle?! Tumatakbo nga ako may dalawang camera na nakasabit tapos the other camera is used to shoot.
I also sit sa window ng car to get the shot I need. My feet are inside the car, my body is outside. Tonyo rolls around the back of his CRV to get the cycling shots he wants.
paul chiongson 09-07-2006, 05:05 PM While in Boracay taking pictures of my family riding the banana boat. I was riding on those small speedboats that had only a seat for the boat's operator. Without an extra seat or anything to tie you down, it was literally a juggling act between trying to get a good shot while the boat cuts through the waves and keeping yourself from getting thrown overboard. These are some of the shots I managed to get.

Happy shots! Nice.
Maybe it's worth investing in an Aquapac for such events
:)

@Earl- Thank for the tips. Was finally able to downsize, this time to less than 19.5kb JPEG requirement. However, when I try to upload, I get informed that it still exceeds the forum quota by 1.66MB. Why is this so?
paul borromeo 09-09-2006, 11:08 AM the most length i have gotten to take the shot was in boracay.
after 17 years of not being on a bicycle with leather loafers and a hang over, i left at 7 with a guide to the other side of the island. going through the whole stretch of pathways, walls, talahib, good roads (downhill ones), bad concrete roads (uphill) and trekking through sharp rocks, getting into a cave, finding only a small amount of water in my bag, cramping both thighs then finding the cathedral like opening and taking the shot!

5 hours!
whew! now although technically it isnt a superb image (horizon due to cramps he he), i treasure it because of the lengths i went to and went through.
thanks for letting me share.

Paul, thanks for sharing. Okay ang shot mo. Makes the entire effort worth it. Now, how do I go to that cave? :)

after climbing out of a cave, we sent out to climb this rock...
i even forgot to switch back to a lower iso
Jo Avila 09-13-2006, 01:01 PM It's either the size of the pixel dimensions, the level of JPEG compression or both :D

Alden, Can you post the exact settings that you used. :)
kaihuang 09-13-2006, 07:23 PM am no sports photographer, so nothing spectacular like that.. but recently i had to shoot someone piloting an ultra light airplne.. from another ultra light.
it was "fun" shooting 500-800ft above ground with only 4point harness and nothing else to hold on to.. the wind up there was very strong, so medyo scary to switch cameras, more so moving your head (baka ma fly-away yun eye glasses ko hehe)
another one was to take a company group pix. they wanted a top shot covering around some 40-50 people. had to go up the tall water tower via the tube ladder. it was difficult carrying medium format camera plus tripod up the tiny tube. only to realized na i forgot to meter them on the ground. buti na lang may spot metering yun dala ko. kaya bracket bracket na lang din.

Okay, so how do I go about it? File says 200 x 160 and 16kb size.
Sorry, medyo di ko pa kabisado PS. :KO: Thanks
Kai, can you post the pics? Thanks :D
Alden Arellano 09-13-2006, 09:37 PM Aaron, di ko pa rin ma-upload. Pero heto link:

andun din yun ultra light.. :)
aaronvicencio 09-14-2006, 11:39 AM @alden may lionfish pala dun! sayang wala akong dala, kahit snorkling gear.

Yup, I saw one. Iniwasan ko pero kinunan ko muna, photo opp eh. hehe
Were you able to go to Anguib beach itself? Mas diverse ang marine life dun. Di ko nakunan, puno na ang SD card nung Kodak PS (128MB lang iyung free). It seems merong thermal vents sa area. Medyo nakaka disorient sa swim. When you're 100 meters from the shore, you expect cool water and no hot springs  Later I learned there's geothermal project in an adjacent town and an active volcano in another.
@Kai- thanks, I'll check your link :)
aaronvicencio 09-15-2006, 08:06 AM yup i did! ganda nung anguib beach.. its really similar to the babuyan islands coastline.
i want to go back there early summer, whales and dolphins pass by that area.
Cagayan north is really something.. itll suprise you everytime you go there
allan_florendo 09-15-2006, 02:01 PM nothing really extreme but i was in chopper shooting an island in palawan.
it was really fun and exciting. one of the best experiences i've had....and i got paid....big time!
hey kai! long time no see!
