Where do you get visual inspirations?

Movies:
I'm a movie addict and aspire to be a film director someday. I get inspirations in classic films merged with todays settings and effects. I admire those visionary directors, in our local setting, saludo ako kay Romy Vitug, he is a very good photographer before embarking to film. The hardest part is watching movies and at the same time pre occupied with feasting on visuals, i tend to loose the whole story when i immersed myself in visual inspirations....

Nature:
I would want to shoot the details of the landscapes rather than the horizons, i find those scraps seashores beautiful rather than the white sand of the beautiful beaches...

Alleys and streets:
For me, the streets of Tondo and Ongpin is a good subject. I love the look of Manila rather than the streets of Singapore...

How bout you, what's your visual inspiration, care to share?:)

I copy from the masters - the photographers I really admire. I would be the first to admit I'm not inherently creative or original so I try to mimic what they do - if I can. That's what my artists friends tell me anyway - know what you like and work from there.

Flickr gives me a daily dose of photos from photographers I admire [Thomas Hawk, Tommy Oshima, Matthew A]. Music videos are also a good source of inspiration [Herb Ritts did Cherish by Madonna - one of my favorite videos ever]. I also look out for great shots in movies [that opening scene from Mr&Mrs Smith is just so perfectly composed and the subjects are hot]. It could also be stuff in magazines like Vanity Fair [have you ever wondered how Annie Leibowitz does her lighting?] or British GQ. As for sports, I like photos from a magazine called Inside Triathlon.

I get mine from dreaming--even wide awake... and specially when I'm in Kyoto :)

I try to absorb the essence of whatever it is around me, simple or complex. :D

i search and absorb a lot thru the internet from photography and other art and design-oriented sites. usually, i hang out to deviantart.

another source of my inspiration are the print materials. from tabloids to beauty magazines, flyers to food menus... i keep on looking and try to get some ideas.

as for streets, i'd prefer going out on a crowded and busy places such as abra (boat) stations and fish market.

the more interesting subjects, the merrier. :)

I am also a Movie addict which can watch whatever type of movie there is. I started young loving movies. Maybe thats where I get my inspiration first :)

Then I ventured to collecting comics, where writers and illustrators like Jim Lee, Frank Miller, Neil Gaiman and alikes shaped my imagination.

After that Anime appeared with their vibrant colors and unique motions.

I also love browsing the net and looking at different websites ( I started using Flash when its still 2.0, and Gabocorp.com was one of my very first inspiration ) , but at times I like looking at design books much better, lalo na pagdrain na ako in coming up with design :)

Right now, I'm new in photography, a very new ground for me, so I just use all of the above to be my inspiration :)

I couldn't agree more...films are a great source of inspiration for me...esp. the classics....A dream project of mine is to re-create and innovate the old film noir look, with the dark chiaroscuro (did I spell that right?) lighting, oblique angles, distorted frames, with subjects engulfed in shadows. Actually, a lot of my earleir photos, when I was still using film were inspired by these...they were dark, grainy, and high in contrast of blacks and whites.

Aside from films, I find inspiration in magazines, books, music, and pretty much anything around me...the main challenge I guess, is how does one create something new from these inspirations...how does one transcend these influences. I think that;s the hardest part, but the most important in forcing someone to create.

Music (most of the time Trance and Electronic) provide visuals to me - it gathers all images that I've seen while working, travelling, browsing internet, watching movies, reading magazine, doing lecture, etc. Then boom! a sudden need to recreate a picture occurs. Minsan sablay, but I guess the errors adds up to factor of inspiration.

Music: Chris Whitley's music has a huge influence in my photography. His music has a cinematic feel to it with sexual references and sometimes bordering on the surreal. A fan even said that his music is like a Robert Frank photograph.
Though he never achieved commercial success he has a loyal, and devoted fanbase. His admirers include Dave Matthews, John Mayer, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Keith Richards, Iggy Pop, Shawn Colvin, and Alanis Morrisette.
If you're into every genre of music you should listen to him.

Books, magazines, travelling, movies and the web.

For a time most of my shots look ala Cidade De Deus/City of God. I even named my Powershot G5, Rocket! I was crazy over Meirelles.

I get most of my fix from the net (Flickr, Magnum in Motion etc.) but I still prefer books! I only get one once a year from my sister :p

I dream of a public library here in Manila where they have 12 floors and one is dedicated to photography. All the Phaidon and Taschen books ever published and a massive archive of magazines like NatGeo, Slate or Aperture.

I get inspired by movies too. And also by advertisements. Most especially if it's a witty one. :)
