Thanks for link! :)
I'm just new with DSLR, is it really important to upgrade my firmware?

For your E510, Olympus claims the following improvements:

1. focusing accuracy when using the EC-20 teleconverter
2. image stabilization at slow shutter speeds
3. reliability when writing to high speed compactflash cards

Not essential but the IS improvement may be a reason to upgrade the firmware. BTW I think this is one of the advantages of the Oly 4/3 system, even an ancient DSLR like my E1 is continuously improved.

DP Review forum says, for Olympus E-510, focusing speed at low light condition also improves. Have anyone here tried the update and noticed that improvement too? I'll be updating my E-510 tomorrow.

Noticed an improvement in focusing in my E1. Now my ZD 50mm macro has greatly reduced "hunting" even when focusing on low contrast subjects in low light. Under such conditions, the E1 appears to focus in distinct steps and it normally needs 2 to 3 steps before it finds focus. This is a lot better than before when it could get "lost".

bert,

that is exactly one of my first observations. e-1/50mm 2.0 combo. the AF improved drastically. they never included it in their list of changes. haha. was so happy to find out you experienced it too. i was just telling myself na 'placebo' effect lang yun. but then now it is a proven fact.

instead of hunting, it just focuses twice, then... spot on. focused.

it feels good that inspite our cameras are 4 year old tech, the functionalities keep on improving with these firmware updates.

Randy,

there goes one of the major reasons why I was considering an E3!

francis,

nothing special really. but just a few;

-full charge your battery
-format your sd card using your camera of course
-close all application except olympus viewer/master/studio
-never touch your camera once the update begins
-never ever ever turn off your camera while the update is in progress
-make sure you are using the supplied usb cable and make sure it is attached properly (cam and usb)
-follow all the instructions word per word

but again, these are just precautions. i've updated a lot of oly cams and never fried one ever. and on my e-1, i upgraded from 1.0 > 1.1> 1.4 >1.5 and never had a problem. but always remember 1. have a fully charged battery 2. never turn off the unit while updating.

that's basicaly it. (madami pala)

The improvement is not that significant as others have proclaimed. It gives you more or less half or a third of a stop improvement.

An improvement nonetheless! =)

I updated my E-510 once, and there was a step not mentioned on the instruction given at Oly site and that is what USB mode you're going to use. I use Storage Mode.

Hi Tok,

Thanks for the info, I've checked my pdf manual, the instruction is for adding languages which is the same step as updating the firmware. I didn't notice it the first time I browse the manual since I use the instruction given at Oly site.

- I just updated my E-510, I didn't get noticeable improvement on the IS based on my own testing. Medyo konting improvement lang but at least still an improvement.
- What I observed is the focusing speed is much better now. Mas mabilis mag lock yung focus kahit sa low light. Kala ko wala ng pag-asa yung speed ng kit lens ko.

woooohoooooo! i think it's just right that i'm getting my E-3 tomorrow and a firmware has just been released!

Firmware update for E-3 v.1.1 (http://www.olympus.co.jp/en/support/imsg/digicamera/download/software/firm/e1/)

here are the updates:

1. Enabled use of the Image Stabilization function with non-Four Thirds System interchangeable lenses by inputting a specific focal length. For details on operations, please click here (http://www.olympus.co.jp/en/support/imsg/digicamera/download/manual/esystem/data_e3_1.1_e510_1.3_ENU.pdf).

2. Matched the rotation of the dial on the rear of the Power Battery Holder HLD-4 and the movement direction of the AF target.

3. Increased the number of storable still pictures by improving the battery check when the Power Battery Holder HLD-4 is attached.

4. Focusing now stops immediately when the AF start button (AEL/AFL or Fn button) is released.

5. Corrected the phenomenon where the flash control caused an under exposure while using bounce flash at short distances with the FL-50R or FL-36R Electronic Flash.

6. Improved selection and prioritization of the central 5 ranging points when shooting in C-AF mode and Dynamic-single Target mode.

wahooo! i'm so excited about update #1 as the only lens i have for now is an OM 50mm 1.4 and now it can work with IS.

thank you olygods! :D

Olympus announced on March 27 firmware update 1.1 for the two kit lenses 14-42mm and 40-150mm. With the new firmware, the two lenses can be used on the soon-to-be-released E-420 with its "imager AF" (contrast AF).

Is there any way to update other than the CD? Can it be done online? Is there a site? My laptop is office provided and they won't let me install the Olympus Master :(
