Our office just bought a Kodak P880 digicam (8Mpxl, DSLR-like body). I noticed that after turning on the camera, even while it is left alone and steady on the table, there is a continuous loud clanking sound from within the camera. Is this a sign that what we got is a MAJOR lemon? Or is this fairly standard observation for this particular model?

Anyone from Kodak here wanna answer this product question? The dealer (TQM) had told us that the sound is normal (STRANGE as it may sound).

What would you guys suggest we should do? The camera is just 2 barely two weeks, but we had the observation since Day 1. We though it would subside, but it didnt.

Hi Tantin,

I've been using the P880 quite extensively and have not heard of the noise that you mention. It really is strange, since the P880 does not even have a zoom motor (since you have your hand to turn the zoom ring) not does it have image stabilization like it's smaller sibling, the P850. The IS is more likely to cause vibration from it's gyro, but not a clackity clack as you describe it.

Apart from the audible noise, are there other issues? What about its ability to take a picture i.e. out of focus shots etc.? The AF hunting focus may be one source, but that's just a guess.

Best bet is to bring it to the Kodak Camera Repair center, at the Kodak Philippines office:

2247 Chino Roces Ave.
Makati City

Tel (02) 810 0331

From EDSA south bound, turn right at what used to be MC Depot/Mantrade. Kodak is the fourth bldg to the right, across Federal Expo.

The Camera Repair Center is on the ground floor, look for Mike Laraya. Please bring a photocopy of your receipt so they know it's well within warranty period.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

Edwin

thanks for the quick reply. I forwarded your note to the person to whom the camera is assigned. Hopefully the problem will be resolved.

I use the P880 also and yes, the motor like sound you are hearing when the camera is in "Auto" mode is perfectly NORMAL. This is the autofocus function of the unit. Try setting your unit to Manual, or Program and the sound will disappear.

You'll find this being discussed in several forums.

as for the Zoom not having a motor - it is actually designed that way which gives the user more control on the zooming. It's also a plus:Grin: as it doesn't consume power that much unlike other motorized zoom cameras.

By the way, how much did you get your unit?

By the way, did you already upgraded the firmware? You can download it in the Kodak Web.

Cheers!!

Hi Ronald,

Thanks for the tip - I'll have to try that out myself so I'd hear that sound. I'd normally shoot Program or Aperture Priority - so maybe that's why I didn't notice it.
